Flappy Bird Is A huge Indie Success: Over 50 Million Downloads, generates $50K per day In ad income

forget angry Birds, for 2014 is all about the juggernaut title that is Flappy Bird, and the way things are going for the game that everybody’s addicted to best now, this one-man effort could even eventually hit the dizzy heights of Rovio’s legendary series. having already amassed much more than 50 million downloads, Flappy Bird is currently generating a whopping $50,000 per day through its banner ads, and with hundreds of thousands of reviews on both the app store and Google Play Store, is best up there with the likes of Google’s Gmail in terms of feedback.

Like all titles that seem to burst onto the scene, Flappy Bird follows the common easy to learn, nigh-on impossible to master format. It provides a good blend of reasonable physics, cute graphics, and a real pick-up-and-play appeal that allows players to readily compete with each other.

But while we’ve seen numerous a title burst onto the scene in the past, this story is a little different. Nguyen Ha Dong, a developer based in Hanoi, Vietnam, built the game up from scratch entirely on his own, and having already coded a few releases in the past, seems genuinely taken aback by the overwhelming success of Flappy Bird.

Obviously, with such a huge following, all the new-found attention would take its toll on a previously-unknown individual, and so it has proved. He noted on Twitter earlier this week that members of the press were “overrating the success of [his] games,” and that he wanted some peace, but having now released some of the figures, it’s clear to see that the hype was all very much justified.

The game is currently being downloaded at a rate of 2-3 million taking into account both iOS and Android, and staggeringly, Nguyen is using no kind of ad campaign or promotion.

Taking up the top spot on the app store in 96 countries at present, Nguyen, who operates as an individual under a company name dotGEARS Studios, has turned himself, and his game, into an overnight viral smash, and if you somehow happen to have missed it, be sure to check the links below and get playing!

And oh, what’s your high score on the game if you’ve been playing it?
